In-12, XXXIII p., [8] f., 442 p., [11] f., contemporary brown speckled calf, spine with 5 nerves, garnet coloured title-pieces, ornamented caissons, restorations (spine rubbed, one bit partly cracked). First edition. Philippe Hecquet (1661-1737), opposed to the theory of gastric fermentation, defends the theory of trituration which will have a long audience. An ardent Jansenist, he was successively physician to the nuns of Port-Royal, the Condé family and the House of Vendôme. His library of more than 2500 volumes formed the core of the Académie de Médecine's library. Provenance: Ex-dono of the author (typo stamp at the foot of the title); A. Garrigues, physician, 19th c.
