VERDI (Giuseppe). Signed autograph letter, addressed to an American correspondent. Busseto, 14 Sett [September] 1900. One page in-12; autograph envelope Negative reply from the composer, to an honorary proposal from the United States: "[] Sono tanto vecchio, molto affaticato, un po malato, e non potrei, ni saprei rispondere adeguatamente alla gent.ma loro lettera. Sono pero riconoscente di cui vogliono onorar mi come un figlio dell'arte, che serve di vincolo fra la Madre Patria, ed i Suoi figli lontani [] ". He justifies his refusal, arguing his advanced age and his state of fatigue, while expressing his gratitude. He assures that he would have been honoured to have been a link between the Motherland and her distant sons, to pay homage to Italy. The envelope is addressed to the management of the newspaper "L'Italia" in San Francisco, California. Moving letter written in Busseto, Giuseppe Verdi's native village, four months before the death of the great musician.
