CLERET A ROUEN Barometer with mercury column and reservoir, presented on a rosewood veneer stand with ebony moldings, finished with a pedestal and resting on ball feet, adorned at the top with a cut-out brass plate engraved with scrolls and cursor, signed CLERET à ROUEN. Louis XIV period H. 104 cm Mercury column changed. A physical instrument invented in 1643 by Toricelli to indicate variations in atmospheric pressure. At the end of the 17th century, Sieur CLERET in Rouen was competing with three other barometer manufacturers in Paris: Sieur Hubin in rue Saint Martin, Sieur Do in rue de Harlay and the famous Thuret.
