Maréchal Ferrand Compagnon cane with trimmings. Horn handle with silver pastille engraved: "B. L. POITEVIN L'ENFANT DE LA VICTOIRE - RA. MARSEILLE St ELOI DETE 1898". H. 134 cm This is Louis François BERTRAND, received in Marseille for the Saint-Eloi summer of 1898. Born in Echiré (79) on 7/06/1878, son of Louis BERTRAND, 30, farmer, and Angèle BLAIS, 24. Witnesses: Jacques GALTIé, 43, schoolteacher; Louis ROCHé, 23, schoolteacher. His parents later settled in Sainte-Pezenne (79). He was awarded the title of compagnon maréchal-ferrant du Devoir in Marseille for the summer St-Eloi (June 25) 1898, under the name Poitevin l'Enfant de la Victoire. Registered in Parthenay under no. 227, class of 1898, occupation: farrier, he was incorporated on 11/15/1899 into the 9th squadron of the Train des équipages militaires as a 2nd-class soldier. Assistant blacksmith 2nd class on 09/22/1900. Aide maréchal 1st class on 11/07/1902. Sent on leave on 20:09/1902 with certificate of good conduct. Transferred to the active army reserve on 1/11/1902. On 04/25/1903 he was resident in Niort (79); same town, quai Cronstad on 04/28/1913. He completed military exercises with the 9th Train Squadron in June-July 1905 and October 1908. Transferred to the Territorial Army on 1/10/1912. Mobilized in 1914; joined the 9th Train on 4/08/1914. Left for the army on 3/08/1915. Assistant farrier on 12/25/1915. Transferred to the 15th Train on 21/11/1917. Left for the Army of the East on 3/12/1917. Transferred to the 8th hussar regiment on 27/01/1918. Transferred to the 15th Train on 03/16/1918; to the 18th Train on 04/6/1918. Promoted to brigadier marshal on 01/13/1919. Placed on indefinite demobilization leave on 02/24/1919 at Niort. Campaign against Germany: in the interior from 4/08/1914 to 2/08/1915; in the armies from 3/08/1915 to 20/11/1917; in the interior from 21/11/1917 to 16/12/1917; in the Army of the East from 17/12/1917 to 23/02/1919.
