Attributed to Adam de COSTER (circa 1586 - 1643) - Lot 89
Attributed to Adam de COSTER (circa 1586 - 1643) Child with wine glass lit by a candle Oak panel, one board, unparqueted, unframed 13.5 x 10 cm Old restorations Trace of inscription on reverse "... alken". We find the same composition in an engraving after Le Nain representing L'Enfant à la chandelle (see G. Geffroy, "Les Frères Le Nain", in L'Art et les Artistes, December 1905, between pp. 66 and 67). The painted work on panel (12.5 x 11 cm) is kept at Saint-Cloud, Département des Hauts-de-Seine, musée du Grand Siècle, donation Pierre Rosenberg (inv. 2020.1.137). The latter is attributed to the Nordic painter Willem Cornelis Duyster. The two paintings may belong to the same ensemble, the Allegory of the Senses. The subject of the man with a wine glass lit by a candle was treated in a composition painted by a follower of Gerard von Honthorst (Panel, 80 x 70.5 cm), kept at the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Karlsruhe (see catalog of the exhibition Judith Leyster, Haarlem, Frans Halsmuseum, May 16 - August 22 1993, reproduced no. 38). Carries an old attribution to Godfried Schalcken. An attribution to Judith Leyster has been suggested.
