GÉRARD (Albert). HANESSE (Robert). Le Bestiaire. This bestiary engraved on linoleum by the drawing workshop of the Collège de Normandie (P. Bordes, J.-M. Chodan, A.-J. Lanoé, R. Ly-Cunh, B. Sérérian) under the artistic direction of Albert Gérard, layout and initials by Robert Hanesse, was printed on the presses of Imprimerie rouennaise, L. Bellanger, 30, rue de l'Hôpital, Rouen. [Circa 1960]. In-folio (40 x 31.5 cm). Leaves, (32) pp. in a soft cardboard folder covered with cream rag paper, illustrated throughout with a linoleum engraving of a tiger in black and brick. Unique edition limited to 250 copies, under the direction of painter Albert Gérard (1920-2011). A pupil of André Charlier, he studied at the Grande Chaumière under Othon Frietz, and a foundation bears his name. Layout and initials by painter Robert Hanesse (1920-1998), book and poster artist, also trained at La Grande Chaumière. Rare reunion of an accomplished school work, engraved on linoleum, with extraordinary expressionist engravings. Twenty-six full-page linocuts in black, on strong, fine paper, with the initial in sepia and a two- to three-line prose poem relating to the animal depicted. This astonishing bestiary is not the work of children, or else they were greatly helped by two great artists. Copy no. 190. Unknown to any library, stain on front cover, stain on back cover and wear on spine.
