Jean ARP (1986-1966) - Lot 512
Jean ARP (1986-1966) Crucifixion Charcoal, etching and cross-cutting on paper, signed at the bottom About 1950-1953 46 x 32.5 cm (14.5 x 12.5 in.) on view Provenance: Sale of the François Arp Collection, Ruth Tillard-Arp Sucession, June 12, 2003, Calmels Cohen lot 76 "This unique work seems to have never been exhibited or disclosed, and to have remained in the private collection of François Arp for all eternity. There is nothing in Arp's known biography to comment on the making of this work at that time, although it is known that, around 1948, he had read the texts of the great mystics, and was still in shock over the death of Sophie Taeuber. The fragile image, the extreme thinness of the crucified man, also recalls other events. Finally, it may be a work for private use, given the religious character of Arp's niece, Ruth Tillard, and her husband, the painter Lucien Billy (to whom Arp devoted a text during his exhibition at the Fürstenberg Gallery in 1963). It should be noted, however, that in 1951 the first heart problems appeared that would take Arp's life in June 1966. That same year, 1951, Arp intervened on behalf of Ellsworth Kelly before the jury of the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. In 1952, he travels to Italy and Greece."
