FRENCH SCHOOL of the XVIIIth century Portrait of Antoine Charles du Houx de Vioménil (Fauconcourt 1728 Paris1792), Lieutenant General and Marshal of Camp. He is represented slightly in a three-quarter view, wearing a short powdered wig, with the blue cordon of the Order of the Holy Spirit across his chest. Second in command of Rochambeau's expeditionary corps in America (1780), Antoine Charles du Houx led the assault column at the siege of Yorktown, and captured the famous redoubt n° 9. The following year he participated in two naval battles, on board the Duc de Bourgogne on March 16, 1781, and on board the Aigle on October 14. Commander in chief of the expeditionary corps after the departure of Rochambeau (1782), A - C. du Houx received on this occasion a letter of thanks and congratulations from George Washington. From the beginning, he belonged to the Society of Cincinnati, gathering the combatants who had distinguished themselves during the war of independence of the United States.
