After Sébastien BOURDON, engraved by Jacques BEAUVARLET (173 - Lot 369
After Sébastien BOURDON, engraved by Jacques BEAUVARLET (1731-1797) J.B. Poquelin de Molière 48 x 35 cm at sight Fading and tear Wooden frame and gilded stucco This curious portrait, very different from the image given by the Mignards, realized in 1773, at the request of the Duke of Richelieu, First Gentleman of the Chamber (and as such in charge of the King's Troupe), seems to have been considered at the time as the official portrait of the actor, author and director, whose Centenary was being celebrated! Around the frame, spread wings, the attributes of the theater, masks, the madness and its bells, a lyre; and a dedication to the Gentlemen of the House by M. de Mailly. The original painting, attributed (like many others quite different), to Sebastien Bourdon, and disappeared for a long time, was found at the end of the 19th century by the critic Auguste Vitu, and passed into the collection of Sacha Guitry (it can be seen in the set of his film Donne-moi tes yeux). Note also that the legend of the cartouche makes Molière was born in 1620, instead of 1622.
