VELLY (Paul-François), VILLARET (Claude), GARNIER (Jean-Jacques). History of France, from the establishment of the monarchy to Louis XIV. A Paris, chez Saillant et Nyon, Desaint, 1770-1798. 17 volumes in-4, homogeneously bound at the end of the 18th c., speckled fawn calf, smooth spine, red basane title and gilt fleurons and scrolls (qq. defects including uncovered headpieces, dull corners: worm tract without gravity in the margin of one volume, qq. brown spots). Important History of France begun by Abbé Velly, and continued by Cl. Villaret and J.-J. Garnier. Volume 16 contains the general index published in year VII. Attached at the time, bound as volume 17, is a work which forms the complement: LAUREAU, Histoire de France avant Clovis, Paris, Nyon, 1789. The copy is illustrated with 240 engraved portraits (out of 285). These portraits, published separately, were not always bound in the volumes, and most copies contain none. Of those included here, 32 were intended to illustrate another work and represent figures from the dynasty of the Counts of Holl. The illustration is completed by a battle plan; volume 17 is illustrated with a frontispiece and 7 plates. (Cohen, 1008)
