[Binding with the arms]. QUINAULT (Philippe). The theater of Mr. Quinault. Suivant la copie imprime?e a? Paris, [i. e. Amsterdam, Wolfgang], 1662-1663. 12 parts in 2 volumes in-12, red morocco, 5-ribbed spine, gilt title, tomaison, mention " Elzev. " and date gilt, caissons bordered by a double fillet and decorated with small irons, all gilt, triple gilt fillet bordering the boards, gilt arms in the centers, double gilt fillet at the edges, inner lace, gilt edges [Cuzin] (one corner very slightly cracked, small snag at the edge of a nerve). A fine copy of this collective edition of 12 dramatic works by Philippe Quinault given by the bookseller Abraham Wolfgang. Each play has its own pagination, is preceded by a particular title page, and a copper-engraved frontispiece. In addition, each volume is preceded by a frontispiece. The collection contains : (vol. 1) : The death of Cyrus, The marriage of Cambise, The feint Alcibiade, The blows of love and fortune, Amalasonte, Stratonice. - (vol. 2) : The come?die without come?die, The amorous fantasy, The generous ingratitude, The indiscreet lover, The rivalles, Agrippa king of Alba, or the false Tiberinus. Provenance: Count Joseph Guilhem de Lagondie (1809-1879) whose important collection of Elzevirian and related editions was sold in Paris in 1879 (arms on the boards and engraved bookplate); Baptiste Jouvin (1810-1886), journalist, bibl. sold in 1887 (bookplate engraved by Stern).
