[Binding with the arms]. TENON (Jacques). Memoirs on the hospitals of Paris. In Paris, from the Impr. of Ph.-D. Pierres, and found at Royez, 1788. In-4, [4] f., LXXIV-472 p., pl., contemporary red morocco, spine with five raised bands, olive title-piece, decorated with small irons and bordered with gilt roulettes, boards decorated with a triple fillet, angular fleurons, arms in the centre, all gilt, double gilt fillet at the edges, guilloche lining and guards of azure moiré silk, gilt edges (qq. defects of which the head-cap is damaged, one corner worn; rare freckling).
First edition of this important survey of the hospitals of Paris at the time, written by Jacques Tenon (1724-1816), surgeon and anatomist, member of the Academy of Sciences. It is illustrated with 15 folding plates showing mainly plans of buildings, including a very large one showing a project for a "hospital for the sick and pregnant women" at La Roquette, and 2 folding tables out of the text. (Garrison & Morton, 1600).
Copy on large vellum paper, bound with the arms of Pius VI (Jean-Ange Brasci, pope from 1775 to 1799). Other provenances: Thomas Vargas Macciucca (large typographed leaf pasted on a flyleaf, containing the 15 laws of the bibliophile enacted by this 18th century Italian collector); Counts of Béarn (engraved armorial bookplate of Alexandre Galard de Béarn, 1694-1768, with a handwritten overprint reading "René de Galard-Brassac Béarn").
