In which the tricks and deceptions of all theriacleurs, alchemists, chemists, paracelsists, distillers, extractors of quintescences, founders of drinking gold, masters of elixir, etc. are amply revealed. Paris, chez Jean Millot, 1610. 8 pages, [16] f. (of which 2 portr. & 1 blank f.), 335 p., 17th c. brown calf, spine with 5 nerves, tan title-piece, ornamented caissons, edges speckled, restorations, renewed white endpapers (light wetness in the head margins of the very first ff., stain on the frame of the second portrait). Rare first edition of this curious and entertaining work strongly opposed to the practices of the alchemists and other followers of Paracelsus, composed by Th. Sonnet de Courval, physician and poet born in Vire (1577-1627). It is illustrated with two portraits, that of the dedicatee, Nicolas de Pelvé, Count of Flers, and that of the author, engraved by Léonard Gaultier. (Caillet 10266; Dorbon 4622; Waller 9082).
