PÉRAU (Gabriel-Louis). Historical description of the Hôtel Royal des Invalides. In Paris, by Guillaume Desprez, 1756. In-folio, [2] f., XII-104 p., pl., blond Empire calf, smooth spine decorated with small irons with imperial eagle in fleuron, red title-piece, gilt roulette with pampers motif bordering the boards, guilloche-covered covers and edges, gilt edges (snags to the headpieces and spine, restorations, epididymis and stains to the boards; qq. boards a little browned, very rare stains and rust stains)
First edition of this superb work in praise of the Hôtel des Invalides, one of the peaks of French classical architecture, commissioned by Louis XIV and built by Bruand and Hardouin-Mansart. It is illustrated with a frontispiece engraved by Cochin after Cazes, 2 vignettes, one of which engraved by Cochin after Pierre Dulin, copper-engraved initials, wood-engraved culs-de-lampe, and 107 plates showing general views as well as details of the building's decoration.
