New edition of this famous manual, which was the basis for the teaching of the art of childbirth that Madame Le Boursier Du Coudray gave throughout France, at the request of Louis XV. The illustration is similar to the one published in the first illustrated edition of 1769, and consists of a portrait of the author and 26 colour plates.
Precious copy which testifies to the passage of Madame Le Boursier Du Coudray in Lille. It comes from the collection of the Lille bookseller Louis-François Quarré-Reybourbon (1824-1906), and is accompanied by a handwritten document of the highest interest: "Inventory of the pieces used to demonstrate childbirth, procured to the city of Lille, by the lady Du Coudray", deposited in the Library of the School of Drawing and Architecture of the city (3 pages in-4°, folds and spotting) Dated 21 February 1775, the inventory is signed by the magistrate who drew it up, and countersigned by the directors of the school on 3 April. It is known that Madame Du Coudray had designed several textile mannequins for use in demonstrations, including a woman's trunk, the womb, the child, and her cord, etc., which are precisely described in this inventory. The last line describes "a book bound in red morocco, surrounded by gold lace, entitled Abrégé de l'art des accouchemens", most certainly the copy presented here, of which 3 mutilated leaves are attached.
