[Manuscript]. [Medicine]. [Malon de Bercy]. DELAULNE (Dr.). - Lot 104
[Manuscript]. [Medicine]. [Malon de Bercy]. DELAULNE (Dr.). Memoir of surgery for the house of Monsieur de Bercy since the beginning of July 1745 [and following memoirs until 1770]. Manuscript, [1745-1771], folio, ink on paper, [39] leaves, almost all written on r° and v°, and a few blank leaves; a few small leaves of notes attached. The whole in sheets under cover with the handwritten title at the time: "Memoirs of M.r de Laune surgeon to begin in the year 1745". (Cover stained and worn).
Exceptional set of detailed fee notes that the Parisian surgeon Delaulne presented to his illustrious client Monsieur de Bercy, during 25 consecutive years. It constitutes by its size, and the wealth of information it contains, a first-rate testimony on medicine in Paris in the 18th century.
Nicolas-Charles de Malon de Bercy (1708-1790) belonged to a family whose nobility dated back to the 15th century, and most of whose members had distinguished themselves in administration at the highest level of the State. His wife, Marie Angélique Françoise Taschereau de Baudry (1712-1786), was the daughter of a finance intendant.
The surgeon Delaulne intervened very regularly at their home in Bercy, where he travelled, depending on the needs, up to 15 days in a month. He came from Paris by carriage, and the transportation at the expense of the patients is precisely detailed in the notes. The task was an important one, since the practitioner treated not only the master and mistress of the house, but also their children and the entire household. The document offers a large number of details on the nature of his interventions (bandages, bloodletting in particular), but also on the various remedies administered, and the evolution of the state of health of his patients.
At the end of each memoir is a receipt which the surgeon signs in his own hand (except for the last two, the one from 1770 bearing the signature "Delaulne Du Coudray fils").
