BALZAC (Bernard-François Balssa, said). History of rabies, a - Lot 55
BALZAC (Bernard-François Balssa, said). History of rabies, and means of preserving men from it, as in the past. This edition is for the government only; it will not be sent to any newspaper or periodical author. Tours, Mame, 1810. In-8, [2] f., 65 p., [2] f., the last blank, recent half tan binding, smooth spine, cherry title-piece, gilt castors (qq. ink stains washed on title and last f., annot. washed on endpapers).
Very rare work, which remained out of print, and forming the separate edition of a pamphlet already contained in Balzac's collection of plays of 1807-1809: it is one of the texts, very few in number, composed by Bernard-François Balssa (1746-1829), father of the novelist Honoré de Balzac, when he occupied in Tours the functions of administrator of the Hospital, namely from 12 March 1804 to 2 February 1814, His position was largely provided by the protection of General Pommereul, then prefect of Indre-et-Loire since January 1801, and was increasingly compromised by the hostility of his successor Lambert from 1807 onwards, combined with the devious manoeuvres of Archbishop Barral.
Only three copies of this edition in the CCFr (Bibliothèque de l'Académie de médecine, Grenoble).
