HUGO (Victor). Notre-Dame de Paris. Paris, Gosselin, 1831. 2 vols. in-8, [4] f., 404 p. + [2] f., 536 p., lightly bound in blond half calf, spine with 4 false-nerves decorated with gilt fillets, title-pieces and tomaison in the same colour, cold fleurons ; untrimmed (3 headpieces torn off with cover damage, spines cracked, spine unstuck, rubbed edges ; very light spotting in the margins of the fx-title and title of vol.1, and sporadically on some pages, browning, some soiling in margins; light stains on pp. 103-110 in t.1, missing corners in margins of last page in t.1 and t.2 on pp. 473; tear without margin mq. p.295 t.2). First edition of Notre-Dame de Paris. A copy of the first printing, without any mention of the edition, without any mention of tomaisons in the false titles, and without the author's name. The work is decorated with two title vignettes by Tony Johannot engraved on wood by Porret. In this copy, on an added leaf opposite each title, two other woodcut vignettes by Porret after Johannot, printed on China paper. Text printed on laid paper with a regularly visible watermark (Vicaire IV, 256-257).
