Rodin - Lot 233
Rodin MODERN SCHOOL after RODIN Bust of Victor Hugo, Patinated bronze with apocryphal signature on the back, right shoulder Marble pedestal Proof obtained by overmoulding a bronze (REPRODUCTION) Old cast iron Height : 43 cm This bronze was presented to the Rodin Committee and will not be included in the artist's catalogue raisonné. Extract from the report of the Rodin Committee: "The details and reliefs in general are very softened compared to the original castings and the signature is unusual and not listed among the signatures used by the artist and his successor. The lost-wax casting technique leads us to believe that it could be an illicit casting made by the Montagutelli foundry at the end of the 1910s, the owners of the Montagutelli foundry having been condemned for forgery in 1919 at the request of Rodin and then the Rodin Museum. In conclusion, we believe that this work is a forgery made by overmolding outside the control of the artist and his successor, the Rodin Museum."
