In-16, 186 pp. (including title), [3] f., 109 [of 110] copper-engraved plates (including engraved title), contemporary brown speckled calf, spine with 4 nerves, gilt title, red edges (rubbing to lower jaw, superficial compass mark and stains to boards, tail cap uncovered, one corner dulled, title soiled with one corner missing in margin, tear without missing p.7, sporadic light wetness in margins, 5 plates a little trimmed by binder, lacks plate 105 enclosed in reproduction). Second edition, increased by 20 plates compared to the first published in 1648, of this treatise composed by the Jesuit Georges Fournier (Caen, 1595 - La Flèche, 1652), geographer, professor of mathematics, and chaplain of the Navy. His Hydrography published in 1643 is the first French maritime encyclopedia. Captioned diagrams formerly drawn in ink on the lower cover.
