GIRARD. BAUDELAIRE (Charles). My heart laid bare. Illustrate - Lot 407
GIRARD. BAUDELAIRE (Charles). My heart laid bare. Illustrated by An. Girard. Nyack, New York, the artist, 1951. In-4, 21 bifeuillets including the title, in sheets under silent cover filled with the publisher. Very rare work by the French painter André Girard (Chinon, 1901 - Nyack, N.Y., 1968). The edition was limited to 30 hand-drawn, silk-screen printed copies (this one unjustified), between January and March 1951. Texts and drawings were traced directly by the artist on the silks of the screens used for the print. A renowned painter and poster artist in Paris in the 1930s, André Girard was the founder and leader of a resistance movement during the Second World War, which led him to have to leave France in 1943 and settle in the United States. He decorated several churches in New York, Vermont, and California, where he designed the stained glass windows of St. Anne's Chapel in Palo Alto.
