Paris & Neufchatel, Briasson & alii; then Amsterdam, Panckoucke & Rey, 1751-1780. 35 volumes in-folio, including 33 in homogeneous binding of the period, full speckled fawn calf, spine with 6 nerves, Havana and fawn morocco title and tomaison pieces (green for the 4 vol. supplement), the last 2 (table) bound in full speckled basane at the beginning of the 19th c., spine with 6 nerves, garnet and green title and tomaison pieces (uncovered caps, worn corners and split jaws; extremely rare interior defects; detailed collation and condition on request). First edition of the famous editorial monument that brilliantly illustrated the thought of the Enlightenment. It consists of 17 volumes of text (published between 1751 and 1765), 11 volumes of plates (from 1762 to 1772), 5 volumes of supplements, including one of plates (published in 1776 and 1777), and 2 table volumes (1780). Nice copy, including all the supplements, the frontispiece and all the plates; as well as the prospectus of the publication. The frontispiece engraved by Cochin, preceded by a particular false title, and followed by an explanatory leaflet, is bound at the head of the first volume of the plates. According to the publisher's count, which adds up each part of the double, triple and quadruple plates, the total number of plates is 3129. To this are added 8 tables, folding out of text: "Système figuré des connoissances humaines" (Vol. 1); Table de mesures itinéraires (Vol. 8); 4 tables of the general divisions of Africa, America, Asia and Africa (Suppl., Vol. 1 and 2); one table, "Système figuré de la géographie" (Suppl, Vol. 3); and the large folding table, "Essay on a Genealogical Distribution of the Principal Sciences and Arts" (Table, Vol. 1).
