[DESFONTAINES (Pierre-François Guyot)]. The new Gulliver, or - Lot 396
[DESFONTAINES (Pierre-François Guyot)]. The new Gulliver, or Voyage of Jean Gulliver, son of Captain Gulliver. Translated from an English manuscript by M. L.D.F. A Paris, chez la Vve Clouzier et F. Le Breton, 1730, In-12, [11] f., 272 p., [2] f., night-blue half-basane XIXth c., smooth spine, gilt title and gilt filets (clear wet. in the margin of the first ff., tear without loss marg. p.199). Counterfeit, at the date of the original edition, of this sequel to Gulliver's Travels. It is the work of Abbé Desfontaines, a native of Rouen (1685-1745), who was the first to translate Swift's famous work into French. A polemist and critic, opposed to Voltaire, he was notably the director of the Journal des savants. Ex-libris manuscript "Arnault, 1760" at the v° of the last f. of the preface.
